The Su Dongpo Academy was one on the least known tourist attractions on Hainan Island. In order to pay homage to one of China's premier 11th century scholar and philosopher poets and to create a strategy for a new tourism destination focusing on the underdeveloped western side of Hainan, the local government sought UI's services to create a Vision Plan and strategy for Hainan's "First Cultural Integrated Resort and Leisure City" at Danzhou; the "Su Dongpo Cultural Tourism Zone". While leveraging the destination potential of the existing "Ancient Zhonghe Town", the tourism strategy knits together the Zhonghe Historic Core, proposed redevelopment of Historic Fuxing Street, the Su Dongpo Academy, and the existing mangrove wetlands that connect west to the South China Sea. In order to create a distinctive iconic presence, UI proposed a new managed wetlands system resulting in the formation of the Su Dongpo Island and Danzhou Wetlands Park, home to the proposed new Su Dongpo Academy, Experience Center, Museum, Poet's Walk Park, an "Artist in Residence" program, the Zhonghe Historic Core, and the Poets Walk; the world's longest "Living Poetry Wall" along a new central canal walk. Additional elements include an evening show projected along the reconstructed ancient wall and "Live Hainan", a related Eco Golf Course, Club, and Su Dongpo City Residences. CCTV adopted the UI created tag-line, "More Hainan, the New West" for their tourism television campaign for Danzhou.
