The government of Sanya, Hainan Island, China, seeking to enhance the image of Sanya as an as a more competitive international tourism destination for Southeast Asia, engaged UI to create concepts and designs for two urban squares in downtown Sanya. Seeing the much larger potential of a potential Santa Urban Renaissance; UI took a comprehensive view of the overall urban tourism potential of the city. Proposing a powerful and unifying urban design strategy, the "Luhuito Tourism Circle"; UI integrated several important existing and new proposed landmarks, including Egret Park, the new proposed Fisherman's Wharf (with an aerial tram experience to Luhuito, a new Coastal Walkway, Luhuitou Mountain Park itself, the Tadao Ando Opera House Island, and the Ribbon Walk Park connecting the two plaza's. In order to create an iconic focus for a new Sanya urban tourism destination, UI also proposed lifting the public realm above the congested traffic below to bridge the two major plazas with a "Chinese Ribbon Dance" inspired elevated landscaped pedestrian walkway. As the new urban image of downtown Sanya, the walkway connect Sanya's new "living room" at the Big East Sea and terminates at the Luhuitou Square with the 125-meter-tall Ribbon inspired observation tower and entertainment and media plaza, home to the proposed Sanya Film Festival.
